In Malaysia the large year-end break for school is in December. We have Girls Camp (and Boys Camp) at this time. This is a shot near my cabin. Beautiful isn't it?
The girls have requirements at camp that are to accomplish. One of them is to learn about edible and poisonous plants in the area. Another is to preserve/protect and restore the enivronment. We took them to an herb garden in the Park and had them find edible plants and then they cleaned out two beds. Above is the bed in the "Before" status.
Some of the girls were smart and just 'borrowed' some of the lemon grass that was being harvested in the garden. Yummy!
Here are the girls in the "After" environment. Those tall sticks that they are standing in between are okra plants!!The girls went kayaking among the water lilies and learned how to make pancakes! This was the first time some of them ever tasted pancakes!
I had wonderful counselors and leaders help every step of the way.
On the left is Puvanes. She's listening to my iPod for a song. The leaders had to perform a skit the first night. She and and I chose Pink's "So What" and we danced and rocked to it for the girls (and with the girls!) and likened it to the YW values. (They're in there - I promise! Plus it's a rocking song!)
On the right is Sandy. She's the best right-hand camping woman ever! She kept me on track all the time. Here she is looking over our schedule on our 'beds' in our cabin.
One activity that I didn't schedule for the girls was fish catching. Not Catching fish, but fish catching!! Fish were released into a paddy for the boys to catch, with their hands!! Some of our girls turned out to braver than I thought and joined them after a good mud fight. It was so much fun! I'm going to miss terribly working with these youth. They are awesome!!
