Strawberry Jam!

Every since we lived in Pennsylvania (1994-1997) and my good friend, Donna Prince, made strawberry freezer jam I have wanted to do the same.

Well, no longer a nomad, this year we did it!

Strawberries purchased. Check. Sugar. Check. Pectin. Check. Cute little jars. Check. 4 pounds of fresh strawberries. Check. Ready to go!

I enlisted the help of the kids. (Of course, how else will they learn the goodness of homemaking?!)

Jordan and Casey washed and cut. Benjamin helped on the side lines. I remembered Donna crushing the strawberries with a potato masher. Alas, our masher was too big/holey. So - I called Donna. (Yay for modern technology and staying in touch with good friends!) She told me she had a different type of potato masher. Oh. She then suggested other tools. Didn't have them. So, we adapted!

We needed something that would crush the berries, but not juice them. (The Cuisinart was out.) We remembered we had a ricer. It's an Italian tool used to make a mashed potato of sorts. The boys were all for it. Here are Jordan and Ben showing their tools.

Benjamin wasn't totally trusted with the ricer, but wanted to keep a close eye on the process.

Jordan and Ben get along really well. Can you spot Ben in this picture?

No?  That's because he got 'Hit' with squirting strawberry mush! Jordan is laughing as Benjamin is dodging.
The benefits of flying strawberries? Tasty elbows!

The final results? 10 jars of strawberry freezer jam! That was Saturday night. It is Sunday night now and we have 9 jars remaining. At this rate I'm going to need to get more strawberries!

I love having a solid-stable home life!

We want that recipe! We're just getting into canning now. Jeremy was so excited to see this post.

I am going to play that M&M game next conference!

To my dear readers. :)

The recipe comes on the package of pectin. It's about $1.50 per packet. It consists of 4 cups of mashed strawberries, 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 package of pectin. Mash berries. Add pection and sugar. Stir. Put in clean jars. Put on lids. Let sit for 30 minutes. Put in freezer. Easy!

Denise, they have way cute canning jars in Germany. If you need the pectin let me know and I'll send you some!

Thank you for your inquiries! Hope you like it. My kids are going through a jar a day!
