The Die has been cast...

Casey was excited to get her cast on. She was tired of having to lie around all day. Here she is with Jordan, doing homework. Lucky for Casey she and Jordan take a few classes together!

Here we are at the doctor's. Even though she took her splint off several times a day (much to my chagrin) her foot was still really smelly. Here she's trying to clean the smelliness before casting.

Casey felt the hazardous waste was the most appropriate receptacle for the cotton padding.

The beaut before casting. Still really green, but the swelling is much better than 4 days prior.

The underside. Oh, I think we didn't update you on the foot. She broke her calcaneous (heel) bone into at least 3 pieces. I'm trying to get a pic of the CT scan that shows it REALLY well.

On to the casting!! Casey and I were really interested in the process, as neither of us have ever had or seen a cast put on. We had decided that we wanted to persuade the tech to do a plaid/checkered pattern. :)

First they put a 'sock' on.

Then they covered that in a cotton. (Similar to the hazardous waste material mentioned previously.)

Then they put on the fiberglass "tape". It has to be wet and then as it dries it hardens. Casey chose a glow in the dark color. Cool!

We weren't able to persuade them to do the plaid, but the did consent and do a swirl/twist. Yeah, we have an awesome cast.

Notice the angle of Casey's foot/cast above? It's a little less than 90 degrees. It was pulling on her achilles tendon, so they cut the cast off! Casey jumped at one point, saying it felt as if it had touched her ankle bone. Ouch!

Here they are splitting the cast after cutting it.

Ah. No cut on the ankle, and first cast on, and off!

They redid the cast and then we stopped for new crutches, as the old ones were rubbing her armpits raw. The second cast sported a brighter (neon) green in a candy cane stripe. We'll have to have this cast cut off in 2 weeks, they'll do an xray, then they'll put a new one on again. We're thinking a bright red to match a candy cane, since the stripes work so well!!
Note: I tried different formatting. Blogger is limited, to say the least. I have no idea how this will look on the final post as all the views I have are different. :) Ah the surprises of life! Good luck following commentary and pictures. I'm sure you'll be able to figure it all out.
