So of course I had to check it out. It wasn't a Pair Rot, or a parrot, but it was colorful. More like a parakeet. Here's a better pic of it.
Apparently this bird had flown up to them. A quick check with my local friend and I learned that this was not a native bird, but probably a house pet that had escaped. Hence the reason for flying up to 9-year old boys. A wild bird would be smarter than that.
All they had to do was put out their arms and stay still and the bird would fly to them! Benjamin especially. He got an arm landing twice, and a head landing!
The bird also responded to verbal cues. Here's a video of Morgan and Ben doing their "bird calling" What is hard to see are the bread crumbs bouncing along with them on the tramp.
After I learned it couldn't be wild we got a box ready to catch it so that we could keep it safe whilst finding its owner. Alas, by the time we got the box ready the boys had either frightened it away or it had grown tired of them. Morgan found good use for the box though.

After being worried then disappointed that their new friend had flown the coop the boys quickly recovered with sustenance and stimulating activity.

Benjamin found a great way to cool off the pizza. Put it on the trampoline and jump with the box. Acts kind of like a fanning action. Then when you're hungry just open the box and viola! Pizza at your fingertips or rather feet. Or if you bounce it high enough, your head. :)
Aunt Natalie and the cousins have volunteered to determine what kind of bird was in our yard. Here is a video for them to help!
